New home new cinema

#1 by Will Fleming , Wed Oct 05, 2016 8:34 pm

So i have not been around for a while due to moving house and business keeping me busy. Anyhoo now that i am settled i need to set up my new cinema and lucky for me my wife has donated the entire top floor to this. It consists of two rooms not the largest but hoping will do i want to turn one into a foyer where i will have a drinks vending machine as well as a shop stall serving popcorn, sweets and candyfloss etc the children will love this bit :) . Now this is all easy enough to do but my question is this what would you say is the minimum length of a room to set up allowing for showing scope etc as i said it is not the largest room i have had to work with. Thanks in advance and glad to be back around :)

I am afraid I can't answer what a minimum room should be. I don't have enough experience, although I guess it will depend a lot on the lens of the projector. But I would just say it sounds super cool to get a whole floor for this! Good luck with that, and I hope you will post pictures when you are done!

As Eivind says, it depends of the lens you use. And how many seats . My home cinema is about 20 feet long ( projection boot excluded ) and seats 22 people

Will, my room is 21 feet long by 12 feet wide. In other words, not big enough! I have a hallway so the projector can sit back an extra 15 feet, making my scope screen 10 feet wide. As I'm in the basement, I can't do tiered seating like Mats did, which would really be ideal as it maximizes space.

Michael, which type of projector and lens set up requires you to have to go back further than 21ft to fill a screen width of 10ft?

I only site my own projector around 23ft away from the screen and its only on mid zoom range to fill an image 8ft wide. I can actually get a image well over 12ft wide from this distance if I had a room and screen to accommodate anything bigger than the screen I have, from this distance.

Hi Will,
The idea for a concessions area is great! It will really give it an authentic feel of a theater.

Now all you need is sticky, uncleaned floors, over-priced sweets and a tall couple talking in front of you and it'll be just like my local multiplex!

(The joy of cinema without having to deal with the problems of a cinema is one of my favourite things about this hobby)

I'm sorry, I mis-spoke Andrew, I'm only back 21 feet for scope screen, then go back the extra 15 feet for my regular 80in w x 60in h screen. My brain was running a little bit on auto pilot last night!

And I was lucky to find the seats, free to collect, from a lokal cinema.

Just keep your eyes open Will. I watched adds for a year or so. Some people asks £100/chair.

Now I get it. This is exactly what the small livingroom at the cabin misses: Cinema seats! :-) I better start convincing my wife :-)
