Pretty much Joe yes. As you say, they had to be general public friendly.
So in Lethal Weapon the Fu#@ings were exchanged for flipping and things like the cocaine snorting scene in the toilets in Crocadile Dundee, were completely cut out.
I still find them completely enjoyable though all the same and they all tend to last about an hour and half so you don't feel totally cheated in the way very short digests can leave you feeling.
Obviously family films like A Golden Seal are there in full, it's just the R movies and above that needed censoring to be able to screen them on the Airlines.
