Quality of duplicates

#1 by Eivind Mork , Sat Jun 25, 2016 11:06 pm

I was looking at a film on 16mm that is a dupe. Obviously the quality will be somewhat lower, but what can I expect? Is the difference allways very noticable? The sound was somewhat "bassy" because it was a dupe according to the seller. Are all dupes with the same amount of quality loss? I have one dupe of road runner where the quality is very noticable when I just looked at one that isn't a dupe. The film I look at now is an old Hitchock where I guess the picture was not razor sharp in the first place.

Im am not an expert when it comes to movies, but my experience when it comes to copies is that you always loose quality, how much is usually related to the quality of the orginal, and the quality of the equipment used to create the copy, but again, i am not an expert when ir comes to films, but i asume that the principal Is the same here as well.

I have a 16mm dupe of "Kong", which is okay, but darkened, which I understand the US prints were to reduce the gory scenes on
the cinema prints, I can live with it because I still have a nice s/8 print.

Some dupes are excellent Quality Elvind, Paul Foster some years ago, purchased the Bob Hope film, "The Cat & the Canary" for myself, from
the US,( this was before ebay ) the man said it was a dupe, Paul & I were amazed at the quality of it, faultless.

Thanks for the input, Hugh. This means it is a gamble, I guess. I expect some quality loss, though, but could be lucky.

Dont buy Sleeping Beauty on eight unless it's a Derann! On the subject of dupes, that much I can say!!

Shockingly bad quality!!

Well its 16mm, any dupes are very good Andrew, granted the 8mm stuff from Italy is dubious.
