8mm... 600 footers / 2 x 400 footers that never happened .

#1 by David Hardy ( deleted ) , Sat Apr 09, 2016 6:42 pm

I was thinking about some edited Super 8mm cut-downs that never happened.
600 ' or 2 x 400' would have been good I think.
These are some that were on my wish list.
What is yours ?
THE GREAT RACE
THE IPCRESS FILE
THE ITALIAN JOB
THE COMANCHEROS
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS
OLIVER
PAINT YOUR WAGON
THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN
THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY
THE BIG GUNDOWN

Alien should have been 600' and ending should have been added to the otherwise great digest. The Thing, Escape from New York, Halloween, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon and Return of the Jedi

Yeah, yeah, I love the 80's

Good topic David, a wish list for titles never to come our way on the bootlace, all excellent choices so far, I'd have
liked to have seen, NIGHT OF THE DEMON, CITY OF THE DEAD, SPARTACUS, BARABBAS, CALIGULA, WICKER MAN,
THE BEYOND, JONATHAN OF THE BEARS, A PROFESSIONAL GUN, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA. The list is endless, but I'm sure our other members have their favourites too

Yes David , Italian job ( Michael Cane version ) planet of the apes ( Charlton Heston version ) any of the one's he was in, Night of the Demon would have been a great cut down.
Saving private Ryan that would have been a nice one, any of the Clint Eastwood dirty harry films would have sold well I think, the day the earth stood still, House on Haunted Hill
with Vincent Price, any of the amicus tales from the Crypt films, these would have done as well as the Hammer Film release's from Derann I think. The list would be long from my point of view, and with some of the newer films I guess the list just would just be added to. A good subject David.

I think the minimum cut-down is about 30 minutes running time. The old 400ft which sometimes were only 16 minutes left a lot to be desired. Some titles need longer, like the old 3x400ft titles. Around World would have made a good 4x400ft Italian job 30 minutes plus the complete getaway so might have to be 3 or 4x400ft

I would have loved to have Night Of The Demon perfect for 4x400ft, I would have bought that full length too.

Saying that some of the titles released would have been better cut-down to 1x50ft.

I still love the smell of film in the morning

I would have loved to see some nice 600ft (or even 400ft) cutdowns of the Bond 007 movies. Certainly they could just edit all the action scenes together.

I would also have liked the Wicker man in a single 600ft.

I agree fully with all the choices listed and would have loved to have seen the following:

Bladerunner
The Thing from Another World (1951 version)
Godzilla (1954: Super-8 Sound.I used to own the silent,Standard 8 version from Film Office.)
Beast from 20,000 Fathoms

There's more titles but I'll think of them later...

Great choice there folks.
How did I forget to add NIGHT OF THE DEMON to my listing. hahahaha !
Yes it is the Michael Caine ITALIAN JOB i meant.
Those Roger Corman and Amicus films would have been great too.
I am sure SPARTACUS would have made a great cut-down as would have
2001 and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.
Yes the list is endless.

Graham, i was always surprised with how little Bond is on Super 8. Derann did good with the 2 x 600 of Never say Never again, (another one i can ever seem to get hold of)
Phil of CHC has released some great pre title sequences to recently, i bet they look great. All the Bond films would have made superb 600 or 2 x 600 foot editions.

Another one we actually ordered was the 3 x 400 footer of Cross of Iron. We paid our dosh but had it refunded buy the auditors of Iver films as they went into liquidation before its release.
I understand this one come up on the German market and we would very much love this in our collection but i'm not that clever with re-recording.

Hi Tom, I have the 3x400 of "Cross of Iron" and its a very good edit, all the great scenes are in there, also the 4x400 "Wild Geese",
which is about 15 minutes longer than Derann's, along with "Cross of Iron 2" AKA "Breakthrough", which isn't on DVD, and "Eagle Has Landed" and "Das Boot", all 3x400s which are still very enjoyable in dubbed German, plenty of action and worth keeping an eye out for.

Breakthrough is on bootleg DVD, I got it, but even if I liked it at the cinema, it was not that good :-)

The Bond films would have made beautiful cut downs, as long as they kept the title sequences intact. I think someone like Walton, who
always gave a good full spool. Imagine them on a shelf, from Dr No to Spectre, in nice double album cases, makes your mouth water.

Aye the Bonds would have been best sellers if they were released in that way.
Better still on low-fade film stocks in hard plastic cases with original poster artwork.

Simple reason why Bonds never really appeared on 8mm is EON Productions who own the rights to Bond, the only reason that Derek got Goldfinger is that he was friendly with a lawyer who was with EON, all the Bonds available from CHC are pirated.
Does anybody remember the 200ft Derann bought out of the Pinewood Studios many many years ago (think it was late 1970's) they had a picture of the Bond Gun Barrel (you now at the start of all the bond movies) Derek told me once that he had a very stern letter from EON productions telling him that he had to remove it from the film box label as it was copyright and he had no permission to use it.

I seem to remember also Dave that a guy saw the Living Daylights trailer reel on their stand, it was probably on their Pinewood visit, and hurled it across the room, he hadn't asked permission, he was being cheeky there, luckily it didn't go further, physically.
