Got myself a new projector. But which model is it?

#1 by Eivind Mork , Sun Nov 08, 2015 2:17 pm

I just came home with a new projector; A Bell and Howell. I got it from my local church who didn't need it anymore. It is a Bell and Howell, but I can't see any model number. Do any of you recognize the type?

Unfortunately the power cable was missing. There is a slight hope I will find it in a storage room in the church, but being moved around for 30 years or so and never been used, I do not have too much high hope. Have you ever seen such a connector, and does it have a name? in the worst case scenario if I can't get one I have to drill a hole in the casing and weld a cable inside.

Haha.. I just saw on my last picture next to the power input that it says model 642. After a google search I realize it actually is the model version :-) I don't know how I missed that.

After a lot of googling, I found the manual: http://www.film-tech.com/warehouse/manuals/BH641-642_s.pdf

It seems though, that it will be really hard to find this plug unless I actually find the plug that came with this very projector. I see others have converted it to a euro plug, but that say that the wiring is very confusing but do not mention what they actually did. But after some more reading in the manual I found, There are some clues from the part mentioning an external power converter. I do not look forward to making this conversion, so I will put some real effort into finding the original plug.

But this projector looks really cool, and the first I have seen with tubes, not transistors. I really hope it works :-) There is no way it will replace my Elmo 16CL as main 16mm projector, but that doesn't mean I will have a great time trying this :-)

After extensive googling I actually found the term "jones plug", but I didn't find any on ebay. Maybe I didn't search as I should or maybe it will show up later. Never seen this plug in my life, but maybe it is common other places of the world. But thanks for the tip, Clyde!

Could also do with people like Maurice Leakey here really for machines like these. He has an incredible knowledge base on all machines and owns probably more projectors than anyone else I've ever known I reckon!

But he won't join? Would love to see more people from the other forum, but can't force anyone

No, it's a real shame you can't get people like the Maurice's of this world to join Vidar.

Still, it's each to their own I suppose.

Finally got the cable and attached a Norwegian plug. Works very well. Need some electrical oil in the volume plug. That's all. Only broke the film once ;-) It has manual threading. Not the easiest thing I've done. The sound didn't work at first until I realized it was not threaded correctly and the film was a bit loose at the sound head. Think I used three minutes to thread the film. Haha :-)

Elvind you have a very fine projector there if its in good working order.
Make sure the " Jones Lead" is in very good condition as a lot of them are perishing by now.
I love the Bell & Howells.
I use them myself. Has your one been converted to Halogen lighting ?

I just got the Jones lead from Phil at CHS as it was missing when I got the projector :-) It is in a good condition.

It is not converted. I believe it has had just one owner before me, and I don't think it has been used very much, and have probably been stored in good conditions all the time. Really happy with it! Now I just need to get used to the threading.

I have a similar machine Elvind, non working, but the gate is maskable, e.g. it can be altered in screen shape.
