My latest purchase, "King Creole" (1958). This one was for my wife as she is infatuated with Elvis; we have an entire room in our house that is dedicated to him and decorated like Graceland.
The auction description was "Elvis presley King Creole 16mm feature. Comes on 2 1600ft reels. Never viewed. Estate find. Very good condition. No returns." That was it. No photos except of the two reels. Now, This is one time where I did deliberate on bidding due to the lack of information and that two 1600ft reels seemed too short for this movie. Without getting a reply from the seller, I bid anyway and won. Only bidder.
The film arrived yesterday and my wife opened the package as I had already left for work. She couldn't tell if it was the movie we bid on. Upon arriving home in the afternoon I set forth to examine the print. It arrived as a mess! both reels at one time were taped closed, but the tape was so old that it disintegrated and the film was strewn about the box (no cans). I picked up one reel (#2) and as best as I could wound the film back on. This was a 2000 foot reel; some relief, but it was VERY full, likely over 2000ft. I examined the beginning of the reel and found a scene I am familiar with. Reel 2 = good to go for now.
I then went to the other reel, hoping it is reel 1. I don't have rewinds so I brought out one of my projectors to spool this back onto the reel as it arrived backwards! This also was strewn about the box. Once I had the film back onto the reel I noticed that over 2000ft of film was overflowing on a 1600ft reel. Somewhat relieved that the footage is more than I anticipated by the listing. I found a spare 2000ft reel and set to correctly rewinding the reel. I found Elvis and realized that I had the first part of the movie. I found Scotch tape on the print and deduced it was to hold the overflowing film in place on the reel. I removed it.
While work was involved just to see what I got, I am more relived the listing was incorrect in regard to reel sizing. It now has a home to give it TLC.
